![]() FIFTY DEAD MEN WALKING receives 7 Genie Award nominations!
Tuesday – March 2, 2010 – TVA Films is pleased to announced that Kari Skogland’s Fifty Dead Men Walking has received seven Genie Award nominations, including Best Motion Picture, Direction, Adapted Screenplay (Skogland), Art Direction/Production Design (Eve Stewart), Cinematography (Jonathan Freeman), Editing (Jim Munro) and Original Score (Ben Mink). Winners will be announced by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television at the Genie Awards April 12 in Toronto. The film – which debuted as a Gala Presentation at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and opened theatrically in Canada in July 2009 – is a drama inspired by Martin McGartland’s shocking real-life story outlined in his 1999 book. Starring Jim Sturgess, Ben Kingsley, Rose McGowan and Kevin Zegers, the film is currently available on DVD. In the 1980s, when the Irish civil conflict was at its most treacherous, 22-year-old McGartland (Sturgess) was recruited by the British police to infiltrate and spy on the IRA. He lived his life under the constant threat of exposure and subsequent torture and death, yet he continued because his information saved many lives. He enjoyed the buzz until he was discovered and had to escape against all odds. To this day, he is on the run. Shot under tight security in Northern Ireland, the film is written and directed by Toronto’s Kari Skogland (The Stone Angel), who also produced alongside Stephen Hegyes, Shawn Williamson and Peter La Terriere. Fifty Dead Men Walking is distributed in Canada by TVA Films. Press contact: Marketing/distribution:
